ABC News reports on the demolition near Bethlehem, with Israeli authorities citing illegality and safety, and the EU calling for all demolitions to halt.

ABC News, in a report posted 8 May 2023, says Israeli forces demolished a Palestinian primary school in the occupied West Bank, citing safety issues. The European Union, which had funded the project, sharply criticized the demolition.

The Israeli defence ministry body overseeing civilian affairs determined the school was "built illegally" and posed a "safety hazard"; the EU called on Israel to halt all demolitions and respect children's rights to education. A Palestinian Authority official said the school served 45 students and comprised five classrooms.

The report says Palestinians hurled rocks at Israeli forces who fired tear gas as bulldozers moved in at Jabbet al-Dhib village near Bethlehem. It also notes Israel has occupied the West Bank since the 1967 Six-Day War; the territory is home to about 2.9 million Palestinians and about 475,000 Jewish settlers.

The article includes a separate key point that the World Food Programme says it will suspend food aid to more than 200,000 Palestinians from next month due to a funding shortage.

A WAFA statement reports attacks on Ras Al-Tin and Al-Tahadi schools, both east of Ramallah, and links them to Israeli far-right incitement.

On 13 August 2023, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned what it called terrorism by Israeli settlers against Palestinian schools, according to WAFA.

The ministry said settlers raided Ras Al-Tin school east of Ramallah, which is threatened with demolition by Israeli occupation authorities, and attacked it, destroying its windows. It also said settlers stormed Al-Tahadi school in Wadi Al-Siq east of Ramallah and sabotaged its contents, under the protection and support of the occupation forces.

The ministry described the attacks as a serious escalation against Palestinian educational institutions, especially those in Area C, which it said constitutes 60 percent of the occupied West Bank and falls under full Israeli military rule.

The statement also condemned incursions into the town of Sebastia and blamed incitement campaigns and positions of the Israeli extreme right led by Ben Ghaffir and Smotrich for providing more protection to settlers.

An Anadolu report describes an attack on a village school serving about 40 children and recounts its demolition in November 2023.

According to the official news agency Wafa, settlers rampaged through Zanuta School east of Al-Dhahiriya, south of Hebron city, and stole its contents, Anadolu reported.

Municipal chief Fayez Al-Tal said the school had been renovated by villagers in preparation for receiving students, and that illegal settlers had previously attacked and destroyed it multiple times, assaulted villagers and attacked their homes.

Palestinian Ministry of Education spokesman Sadiq Al-Khadour condemned the settler attack as "a new attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians from their villages." He said the school serves about 40 children from remote communities and called on human rights organizations, especially UNICEF, to ensure it can continue its vital work.

In November 2023, illegal settlers demolished Zanuta School after forcibly displacing more than 250 residents from the village in late October. After more than nine months of forced displacement, villagers secured an Israeli court order in August 2024 allowing them to return to their homes.

#### Takeaways

- The report says the school serves about 40 children from remote communities east of Al-Dhahiriya.

Al Jazeera reports that Israeli settlers are blocking Palestinian children from school in the West Bank. The report says Israeli settlements and outposts built on occupied Palestinian land are considered illegal under international law.

Save the Children says it works in Umm al-Khair directly and through its partner, the Agricultural Development Association (PARC), providing essential supplies and livelihood support, including winter kits and animal feed. Ahmad Alhendawi, Save the Children's regional director for the Middle East, North Africa and Eastern Europe, called the blockade 'a worrying attack on children's right to education'.

He said Israeli authorities and settlers are ending any sense of safety that previously existed for the three million Palestinians living in the West Bank, and that students and teachers across the occupied Palestinian territory have been killed, wounded, arrested and detained. Alhendawi warned of a lost generation, noting children in Gaza are now in their third year without regular schooling. The Palestinian Information Center reports the 2025/2026 academic year opened after a one-week delay, with nearly 48 schools closed in Qabatiya district because of Israeli raids.

The new academic year began on Monday 8 September 2025 across the occupied West Bank after a one-week delay, according to the Palestinian Information Center. Dozens of schools remained closed due to ongoing raids and incursions by Israeli occupation forces in towns and villages south of Jenin.

The Palestinian Ministry of Education and Higher Education had announced the delay the previous week, citing the financial crisis caused by Israel's economic siege and the withholding of Palestinian tax revenues. Schools in Jerusalem were excluded from the postponement.

Around 46,000 Palestinian refugee children returned to UNRWA-run schools across the West Bank. UNRWA said its schools remain a safe haven for children, offering education and psychological support despite escalating violence and mass displacement. The Education Ministry inaugurated the school year at Deir Jarir School east of Ramallah and later at Shalal al-Auja School in Jericho, while classes were suspended in nearly 48 schools in the Qabatiya district of Jenin due to Israeli occupation forces raids. Education Minister Amjad Barham announced that the school year in affected areas would resume once the raids end.

An Israeli news report describes demolition orders against West Bank schools and the recent demolition of Ein Samia school, funded by the EU, in Area C.

An Israeli news report states that dozens of schools in the Palestinian Authority are at risk of demolition, with hundreds of students potentially left without a school framework. The report says that in every school with a demolition order, about 10 students are affected.

The report describes the demolition of Ein Samia school, east of Malk village in the Ramallah district, about two weeks before publication. The school was located where 28 families, about 200 residents, live, in Area C, and had received European Union funding. After the demolition, an EU delegation visited the site and asked the Israeli government for the investment money.

Architect Alon Cohen Lifschitz of Bimkom, which assists Palestinian communities in Area C, is quoted saying that preventing education is a way to prevent development, and that the harsh living conditions with daily threats required establishing small schools close to residential areas. He describes the wholesale demolition of schools as exposing a reality of abuse and exclusion of communities.

Human Rights Watch says Israel destroys Palestinian schools without ensuring replacement education, citing its own findings and UN data.

Human Rights Watch states that Israeli military authorities have demolished or confiscated structures or property of Palestinian schools at least 16 times since 2010, with 12 of those actions since 2016, sometimes hitting the same schools repeatedly.

According to HRW, when Israeli authorities demolish schools they do not take steps to ensure children in the area have access to schools of quality at least equal to those destroyed. Bill Van Esveld, senior children's rights researcher at HRW, is quoted saying that Israel has destroyed elementary schools and kindergartens in Palestinian communities without paying a price, and that refusing building permits while destroying schools built without permits is discriminatory and violates children's right to education.

According to UN data cited by HRW, in more than a third of Palestinian communities in Area C, the 60% of the West Bank where full building authority is held by the Israeli army under the 1993 Oslo Accords, there are no elementary schools, and 10,000 children study in tents, shacks or other structures without heating or air conditioning. According to UN estimates from 2015, about 1,700 children are forced to walk five kilometers or more to reach school due to road closures, inaccessible roads, lack of transport or other problems.

HRW also notes that the long distances and fear of harassment by settlers or the army lead some parents to take their children out of school, disproportionately affecting girls.

#### Takeaways

- HRW found at least 16 demolitions or confiscations of Palestinian school structures or property since 2010, 12 since 2016.

- UN data cited by HRW: over a third of Area C Palestinian communities lack elementary schools; 10,000 children study in tents or shacks.

- UN estimates from 2015: about 1,700 children walk five kilometers or more to school.

- HRW quotes its researcher saying the permit refusal and demolition policy violates children's right to education.

## Open questions

- How do the 837,000 students WeWorld says faced barriers in the past school year relate to the 830,000 UNICEF says returned at the start of 2026-27?

- Do the 1,200 incidents WeWorld records for 2025 include or overlap with the 174 incidents Save the Children records for the first 50 days of the 2026-27 year?

- Which of the schools WeWorld reports face demolition orders or closure, if any, are counted among the 140 affected between 1 September and 20 October 2026?

- What share of the more than 875 lost school hours is attributable to movement restrictions, and what share to direct attacks?

- Has the barrier at the entrance to Qasra, reported by local residents since 2023-10-07, affected any of the 24,500 students in the 2026-27 first-50-days count?

- How does the 121 per cent rise in students affected in the first 50 days compare with WeWorld's count of over 1,200 incidents across 2025?
