> Kenya counted nine confirmed Bundibugyo Ebola cases and two deaths as of 2026-10-24, all in one cluster of known contacts after an imported case from the DRC; WHO as of 2026-10-20 and the Ministry of Health as of 2026-10-24 report no evidence of wider community transmission. Across the Ethiopian border, the counts diverge: Save the Children's October 2026 Humanitarian Update reports approximately 15,240 displaced, a figure disputed by higher counts from UNHCR, KNCHR and local authorities — according to UNHCR 36,000 people had fled as of 2026-10-27, according to KNCHR approximately 40,000 people had sought refuge in Moyale as of 2026-10-27, and according to local authorities up to an estimated 50,000 people had crossed as of 2026-10-28.

## One Imported Virus, Four Counts at the Border

### Nine Cases, One Cluster, and a Regional Bundibugyo Spread

As of 2026-10-24, Kenya had confirmed nine cases of Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus, including two deaths. The second death was a 65-year-old woman, the third confirmed case and a close relative of the first patient.

Kenya's first case was an imported case in a Kenyan man who had travelled from the Democratic Republic of the Congo; he died on the night of 2026-10-05, and the case was reported on 2026-10-06.

All confirmed Ebola cases in Kenya are linked to one cluster of known contacts of the first imported case, with no evidence of wider community transmission, according to WHO as of 2026-10-20 and the Ministry of Health as of 2026-10-24.

The Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak was declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo on 2026-05-15 and has spread to other countries, including Uganda, Kenya and Nigeria. Nigeria confirmed an imported Bundibugyo Ebola case in Abuja on 2026-10-20 in a person who had travelled from Uganda.

### A Border in Motion: Competing Counts of the Displaced

Clashes in and around Moyale on the Ethiopian side of the border, between forces linked to the Oromia and Somali regional states, have driven thousands of people across the border into Kenya since late October 2026.

Save the Children's October 2026 Humanitarian Update reports approximately 15,240 people in Kenya were displaced following cross-border conflict in Ethiopia; the figure is disputed by higher counts from UNHCR, KNCHR and local authorities.

According to UNHCR, 36,000 people had fled from Ethiopia into Kenya as of 2026-10-27. According to the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, reports indicated approximately 40,000 people had sought refuge in Moyale as of 2026-10-27.

According to local authorities, up to an estimated 50,000 people had crossed from Ethiopia into Kenya as of 2026-10-28.

- Why it matters: Registration queues reflect the scale of displacement and the administrative challenge of documenting new arrivals.

The photograph shows people queuing for registration, a scene consistent with the influx across the Ethiopia-Kenya border. Save the Children reported approximately 15,240 displaced people in its October 2026 update, while UNHCR reported 36,000 people had fled as of 2026-10-27 and KNCHR reported approximately 40,000 people in Moyale. Local authorities estimated up to 50,000 people had crossed as of 2026-10-28. The diverging counts underscore the difficulty of verifying numbers at a fast-moving border.

The Ministry of Health details isolation, laboratory confirmation and the start of contact tracing around the first imported case.

The Ministry of Health reports that Kenya confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease in a traveller assessed at Nairobi Hospital. The patient presented with fever, chills, fatigue, muscle pain, painful swallowing, a sore throat and bleeding under the skin at injection sites.

The National Virology Reference Laboratory and the Kenya Medical Research Institute independently confirmed Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease. The patient received supportive treatment but has since died, and arrangements for a safe and dignified burial are underway in line with Ebola burial protocols.

The Ministry identified 28 contacts, including family members and health workers who attended to the patient. It is also tracing 23 passengers and four crew members who travelled on the same flight, with quarantine arrangements underway for people considered at risk.

As of 6 October, health authorities had screened 652,584 travellers and tested 267 samples across five laboratories: the National Virology Reference Laboratory, Kenya Medical Research Institute laboratories in Nairobi and Kisumu, and mobile laboratories at the Busia and Lwakhakha border points. One sample tested positive.

#### Takeaways

- Kenya's first imported case was confirmed by two laboratories after assessment at Nairobi Hospital.

- The Ministry identified 28 contacts and is tracing 23 passengers and four flight crew.

- As of 6 October, 652,584 travellers had been screened and 267 samples tested; one sample was positive.

A WHO news release describes the two close family contacts who became ill and the contact list behind Kenya's response.

The WHO Regional Office for Africa reported on 16 October 2026 that Kenya had confirmed its second and third cases of Bundibugyo Ebola on 14 and 16 October. The patients, a 39-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman, are close family members of Kenya's first case and were already in quarantine when they fell ill.

Kenya had confirmed three cases, including one death. The first case, a Kenyan man who had travelled home from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, died on the night of 5 October; the release calls it the first Ebola case ever recorded in Kenya.

Health teams identified 130 people who had been in contact with him, including family members, friends, health workers who cared for him and people who travelled on the same flight. By 16 October, 127 of the 130 contacts listed by the Ministry were in quarantine, with daily temperature and symptom checks for 21 days.

WHO Representative Dr Neema Rusibamayila Kimambo said quarantine protects the family and the general public from exposure, reducing chances of community transmission. The release notes Ebola spreads through direct contact with blood or body fluids of a sick or deceased person, not through the air.

#### Takeaways

- Kenya's second and third cases were confirmed on 14 and 16 October and were close family contacts of the first case.

- By 16 October, 127 of 130 identified contacts were in quarantine with 21-day monitoring.

- WHO framed quarantine as reducing the chance of community transmission.

The 27 October 2026 statement calls for urgent rights-based humanitarian action amid shelter, health and sanitation pressures.

In a statement dated 27 October 2026, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights reports concern over approximately 40,000 people having sought refuge in Moyale after fleeing unrest in Ethiopia. More than 15,000 are reportedly accommodated in eight temporary shelters, while over 20,000 are staying with relatives and friends.

Reported shelter locations include St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Harhosha Secondary School, Manyatta Burji, Sessi and Lanzi Mosque Hospital, among other sites. The influx is placing significant pressure on host communities and available resources, particularly food, clean water, shelter, sanitation and healthcare.

The commission notes the situation was reported calm on both sides of the border as of the morning of the statement, but rain across the Moyale area heightens concerns about exposure, sanitation and possible communicable disease outbreaks. Reports that two women gave birth at Manyatta and two others at Bitiye further underline the urgent need for maternal, newborn and reproductive healthcare, emergency treatment and postnatal support.

The BBC reports rising concern about further spread even as authorities reassure citizens, with the United States warning against travel and neighbouring countries on alert.

The BBC reports that nine Ebola cases had been confirmed in Kenya, and that concerns were rising that the virus could spread further even as the government sought to assure citizens. The United States warned its citizens against travelling to Kenya, while Uganda, Ethiopia and Somalia remained on alert.

Nearly 5,000 people have died since Ebola was confirmed in DR Congo in May, making this the second most deadly outbreak of the disease, with more than 10,000 cases recorded there. Kenya faces a steady risk of new cases arriving across borders, according to the International Rescue Committee.

The outbreak is caused by the Bundibugyo species, which is relatively rare and has no approved vaccine or treatment, though trials are under way. Kenyans questioned how the first patient was able to spend time in the region worst affected by Ebola and then travel through two more countries before his illness was identified; he died days after his arrival in Kenya.

The doctors' union in Kenya voiced concern over 'lapses' at border points with Uganda and Tanzania and at Kenya's main airport. Union representative Dennis Miskellah told the BBC that border and port facilities were grossly understaffed.

#### Takeaways

- Nine Ebola cases had been confirmed in Kenya, according to the BBC.

- The Bundibugyo outbreak has no approved vaccine or treatment, though trials are under way.

- Nearly 5,000 deaths and more than 10,000 cases have been recorded in DR Congo since May.

- The Kenyan doctors' union says border and port facilities are grossly understaffed.

### New Bundibugyo variant in 2026 outbreak is a distinct zoonotic spillover, genomes show

Nature Medicine study finds the 2026 Bundibugyo virus genomes cluster separately from earlier outbreaks, with evidence of sustained human transmission.

This Nature Medicine article, published 2026-08-10, reports an outbreak of Ebola disease caused by Bundibugyo virus declared in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in May 2026, with cases originating from the DRC and locally transmitted cases reported in Uganda.

The authors generated 22 genomes from samples obtained from individuals with Bundibugyo virus disease in the DRC and Uganda. These genomes form a well-supported phylogenetic cluster separate from BDBV variants associated with the 2007-2008 outbreak in Bundibugyo District, Uganda, and the 2012 outbreak in Isiro, DRC.

The finding, together with evidence for sustained human transmission, is consistent with the emergence of a new zoonotic spillover event rather than resurgence of previously reported variants.

The report advocates for increasing decentralized laboratory-diagnostics capacity, with pan-Orthoebolavirus assays and genomic sequencing, to limit further outbreak expansion and enable timely detection.

#### Takeaways

- The 2026 Bundibugyo outbreak in DRC and Uganda is caused by a variant distinct from those seen in 2007-2008 and 2012.

- The study generated 22 genomes and found evidence for sustained human transmission.

- The authors call for decentralized genomic sequencing capacity to detect and limit outbreak expansion.

The Kenya Meteorological Department's October 2026 bulletin forecasts enhanced rainfall over most of the country, with flood and crop disease risks.

The Kenya Meteorological Department issued its Agrometeorological Monthly Bulletin for October 2026 on 5 October 2026. The bulletin states that October 2026 marks the onset of the October–November–December 'Short Rains' season over much of Kenya.

Above-average rainfall is expected over most parts of the country, with higher probabilities over Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Mandera and parts of Taita Taveta, Tana River, Garissa and Wajir. Above-average rainfall is also expected over Makueni, Kajiado, Machakos, Kitui, Nairobi, Kiambu, Murang'a, Kirinyaga, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, Meru, Isiolo, Nyandarua and Nyeri.

The bulletin says near-average to above-average rainfall is expected over much of Western Kenya, Nyanza and parts of the Rift Valley. The enhanced rainfall is expected to improve soil moisture, pasture regeneration and water availability, creating favorable conditions for land preparation and planting.

However, heavy rainfall events may cause waterlogging, flooding, soil erosion, delayed farm operations, crop diseases and difficulties in transporting farm produce. Mean temperatures are expected to be warmer than average across the country, with the warmest conditions likely over the Northeastern and Southeastern lowlands and the Coastal region.

#### Takeaways

- The October 2026 bulletin forecasts above-average rainfall over most of Kenya during the October–December short rains season.

- The enhanced rainfall is expected to improve soil moisture, pasture regeneration and water availability.

- Heavy rainfall events may cause flooding, waterlogging, soil erosion and crop diseases.

- Mean temperatures are expected to be warmer than average, especially in the Northeastern and Southeastern lowlands and Coastal region.

## Open questions

- Which displacement count is closest to the true number: approximately 15,240 per Save the Children (disputed), 36,000 according to UNHCR as of 2026-10-27, about 40,000 according to KNCHR as of 2026-10-27, or up to 50,000 according to local authorities as of 2026-10-28?

- Did any confirmed Ebola case in Kenya occur outside the known-contact cluster after 2026-10-24?

- How many of the 2.0–2.49 million people projected nationally to face acute food insecurity by March 2027 are in counties already counted at IPC Phase 3 or worse in arid and semi-arid lands?

- What is the exact proportion of children among the 871,568 refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya beyond 'over half'?

- Does the imported Bundibugyo case confirmed in Abuja on 2026-10-20 share any contact links with the Kenyan cluster?

- Will the forecast above-average October–December rains cause flooding in Moyale and the border areas where displaced people are sheltering?
